Moot AfriForum neighbourhood watch has upped its battle against crime in the area.
Chairperson Andries Opperman said the East-Moot neighbourhood watch was busy training its members last Thursday to uproot criminals in Bergtuin and Waverley.
He said the watch staged a drill where some members posed as criminals hiding in strategic areas while others tried to flush the criminals out.
“These ‘suspects’ hid in the area, while the rest of the neighbourhood watchers searched for them on foot and via vehicle patrols,” he said.

Opperman said although this was only an exercise, it still contributed to awareness and improved visibility in the community.
“AfriForum‘s neighbourhood watches are here to make a difference by assisting communities, to act as eyes and ears, thereby supporting the police,” he said.
Opperman said last week’s exercise was the second in the area.
“Meanwhile, we continue with our standard and regular patrols as normal.”
He thanked everyone who took part in the operation.
He said members learned a lot from these types of exercises and would continue to have similar actions on a regular basis to make the community aware within the framework of the law.

AfriForum head of community safety for the northern region Hillel Coetzer said these types of exercises promoted collaboration and sharpened community resilience.
“Continuous training must be done regularly to ensure that neighbourhood watch members can assist the community within the framework of the law.”
