Police in the north of Pretoria have identified theft out of motor vehicles and hijackings as crimes which are trending in the area.
In addition, they are also warning against the related crime of smash-and-grabs.
They shared the following pointers with Rekord to help residents avoid falling victim to these crimes.
– Avoid parking where there are no security guards or other cars.
– Do not leave a firearm in the vehicle’s cubbyhole or anywhere else in the vehicle when it is parked.

– Ensure all doors and windows are properly locked when parking the vehicle.
– Place valuables such as laptops, bags or cameras in the boot.
– Be cautious of people approaching to inform of a flat tyre, as their intentions could be to steal the items in the vehicle or the vehicle itself.
– Keep windows closed when driving in the city centre.
– Avoid opening windows for hawkers along the road and at robots.

– Do not drive and use a cellphone.
– Park in well-lit areas at night.
– Do not leave your handbag or briefcase visible in the car.
