Tshwane SPCA disappointed with low turnout at event

“Despite the turnout, we are still considering making it an annual event.”

The Tshwane SPCA expressed its disappointment at the low turnout at its Ride for a Rescue charity bike ride event on Saturday morning, probably due to the cold.

The event was hosted by Easy Learning Riding Academy for bike riders to raise R1 000 to donate to the Tshwane SPCA.

“We are disappointed by the turnout; however, this is a start,” said SPCA Tshwane general manager Dewald Wahlstrand.

Wahlstrand said despite the turnout, the SPCA was still considering making it an annual event.

Lynette Jacobs of the Easy Learning Riding Academy said she came up with the initiative to help raise funds for the animal welfare organisation.

“The SPCA is struggling to get funds. The government does not really help in all their needs.”

Jacobs said the community had to step in and play a role in assisting organisations such as the SPCA that render valuable service to the community.

She said bikers were a community that loved animals very much, adding that she enjoyed the event and wanted to see it grow.

“There were about 15 bikers who started with us; however, some got lost and took the wrong routes,” she said.

SPCA spokesperson Elsa Daniels thanked the public for supporting the event.

“A special word of thanks to Lynette Jacobs and her son, Alex Karsten, of Easy Learning Riding Academy, who initiated and organised the event,” Daniels said.

“We really appreciate the time and effort of everyone who contributed to the event.”
