UPDATE: Crutches are now east teenager’s second pair of legs

Steyn Steenberg is getting stronger each day and is expected to return home shortly.

The teenager who tragically lost a leg in a motorcycle accident in May may be discharged from the rehabilitation centre soon.

Steyn Steenberg (16) has spent the last five weeks in a rehabilitation centre where he received extensive therapy to help him learn how to walk and talk again.

Steyn was on 1 July referred to neuro-ophthalmologists in Johannesburg for the evaluation of his injured eye.

“Steyn lost 50% of his vision in the left eye. He is basically blind from the centre right. His right [eye] is 100%. The eyes see but his brain does not process the information,” his father, Jacques Steenberg explained.

“According to them, the chance is slim that it will improve and he will have to learn techniques to compensate for it. Apparently, such patients are able to lead a normal life.”

Jacques said although Steyn’s speech is improving weekly, it still needs a lot of work.

“But we are still very optimistic about it.”

Steyn’s physiotherapist is also very happy with his physical progress.

“The physio said she feels comfortable to discharge him from the rehabilitation centre soon,” Jacques said.
