Tshwane, AfriForum reach middle ground on tariff hikes

“Having agreed on these terms, AfriForum will no longer pursue the court action to block the implementation of the proposed tariff hikes.”

The City of Tshwane and AfriForum have pledged to work together after the two battled over the 2019/20 electricity tariff increases.

Mayoral Spokesperson Omogolo Taunyane said the city and Afriforum would now meet quarterly to clear the lines of communication in the tariff matter.

“Having agreed on these terms, AfriForum will no longer pursue the court action against the city that sought to halt the proposed tariff hikes. This will result in a more conducive environment for engagement with the City.”

Taunyane said the deliberations with AfriForum were an indication that at the end of any disagreement, there was an acknowledgement that all communities are part of one Tshwane.

The Tshwane residents will also currently be charged according to last year’s tariffs as approved by Nersa, said Taunyane.

Tshwane will credit prepaid users that had to pay the increased tariff,” she said.

Afriforum and Tshwane now await Nersa’s approval of the 2019/2020 tariff increase.

This comes after AfriForum went to court to prevent the metro from instituting the increases without the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) approval.

Tshwane is now awaiting Nersa’s final determination on whether their tariffs are in line with guidelines.
