One robber has died and another has been arrested following an armed robbery at the Centurion Mall on Thursday evening.
Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said the arrest followed after four robbers entered the mall and robbed one of the stores.
“Security was alerted to the situation and responded,” he said.
“One of the suspects saw the security guard approach and fired at the security officers, who returned fire.”
Miller said two of the robbers was shot and injured.

The security guard was also hit in the exchange.
“One suspect was hit in the leg and the second one was hit in the upper body,” he said.
Miller said the robber who was hit in the leg fled the scene and attempted to hijack a vehicle outside the mall.
“However, he was unsuccessful and was apprehended,” he said.
The other injured robber was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

Miller said two unlicensed firearms and money stolen from the store were recovered on the scene.
He said the security officer who was shot was in a stable condition at a private hospital.
“We are still looking for the two suspects who managed to escape and are following up on all leads,” Miller said.
“The arrested suspect will face charges of being in the possession of unlicensed firearms, attempted murder and armed robbery.”
The police wished the security officer a speedy recovery.

“We wish to convey our appreciation for his willingness to place himself in harm’s way to ensure that these suspects were arrested,” he said.
A shopper who got caught up in the middle of the mall shoot-out shared her experience with Rekord.
“I heard gun shots but could not see anything because there were many people running around,” the shopper, who wished to remain anonymous, said.
She was in a shop near the scene where the security guard confronted the robbers.
“We moved to the back of the shop to take shelter.”
