A north resident who recently celebrated her 103rd birthday, still sings and makes her own bed.
Martie Mey of Pretoria North recently celebrated her 103 birthday with a high tea get-together with family of various generations.
Mey celebrated her birthday at Rubie Rose on 7 July with 30 family members from far and near.
Two of Mey’s living siblings, her sister, Liz Bradfield (83) and brother, Harry Prinsloo (80) came all the way from Bloemfontein for the special day.

Mey was born one of 14 children on 7 July 1916 in Bloemfontein.
Mey also boasts a big family of her own – four children, three daughters and a son, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Back in the day Mey was a dress designer at Sonop in Bloemfontein where she made wedding dresses. Her father built the city hall in Bloemfontein.
Mey’s family was crowned the biggest family in Bloemfontein in 1945 by the local newspaper.
“She has never been admitted into hospital,” Mey’s daughter, Silvia Hustler told Rekord.
Hustler says her mother still makes her own bed and is active for her age.

“She used to enjoy watching soapies but due to her age she is struggling with her sight and hearing. Now she enjoys listening to the bible on CD”.
Hustler says her mother still played the keyboard and piano last year.
“Her joints are getting stiff so she can’t play anymore. She does however still sing a lot, especially when she can’t sleep at night. We often hear her.”
