Local organisation donates food and clothes
"We chose Skielik residents because we saw a huge gap in the area, lack of opportunities and high rate of unemployment.”
Residents of Skierlik in Mamelodi East recently received donated food parcels and clothes.
The generous donation was made by the non-profit organisation Sisters Seminar Foundation and Family of Christ.
Thapelo Makopo from the foundation said the reason they made the donations was to see people, especially those who come from poor backgrounds happy and warm during winter.

“We chose Skierlik residents because we saw a huge gap – lack of opportunities and high rate of unemployment.”
“Our organisation aims to empower all genders and uplift the talent and skills of those in our community.”
The two local organisations also donated sanitary pads to the residents, especially to schoolgirls.
Makopo said the aim of donating sanitary pads was to help schoolgirls not to miss class when it was that time of the month.
Makopo said they first visited the Skierlik residents to assess their needs.
He said the clothes donated to the residents were collected through social media.
“We made an announcement to the public to donate old clothes for the needy.”
“The food parcels and sanitary pads were bought with money donated from our own pockets.”
Makopo said their organisation was founded last August with the aim of helping young people through the challenges they faced.
“Our young people are suffering from depression, peer pressure, drug abuse, human trafficking and women abuse,” he said.

However, he said the donations at Skierlik were part of the Mamelodi tour to invite residents to an annual seminar at Mamelodi West Community Hall on 17 August.
Makopo said they would be talking about gender violence, business opportunities, empowerment of youth and motivational talks.
He said more than 30 Skierlik families had received food, clothes and sanitary pads.
