UPDATE: Steyn’s first day back at school
Twelve weeks after his serious motorcycle accident, Steyn Steenberg returns to school.
Steyn Steenberg, who lost his left leg after a serious motorcycle accident on 12 May, was back at school on 22 July.
“He is ready and very positive. We are so proud of him and the progress he has made,” Steyn’s father Jacques told Rekord on Monday.
Jacques posted a photo on the “Steyn se storie” Facebook group in his school uniform walking towards the school gate with his temporary leg and crutches.
“There he walks into his school this morning. It completely felt like his first day of Grade 1 again,” Jacques captioned the photo.

After spending more than two weeks in the Unitas hospital in Centurion, Steyn was transferred to a rehabilitation centre on 30 May where he received intensive physio, speech and occupational therapy.
“He is doing very well. There are still a few things he needs to get the hang of. He still needs to practice walking with his temporary leg,” Jacques explained.
Once there are enough funds, Steyn will receive a permanent prosthetic leg.
Jacques also said Steyn has also gone back to church again for the first time since the accident.
He will not yet spend a full day at school. It is just to get him back into the routine of school, said his father.
Steyn’s school is currently busy organising a big fundraiser to generate money to help pay for a prosthetic leg for him.
“This will help a lot as our medical aid does not cover all the costs,” said Jacques.
He said he had also been contacted by a few people who want to contribute towards a prosthetic leg for Steyn.

“We will announce all the final arrangements of the fundraiser on Steyn’s Facebook group as soon as more information is available,” Jacques concluded.
The fundraiser is set to take place at the end of September.
