North stokvels urged to use banks after robbery spike
"These thugs are armed and we appeal to members not to play heroes."
Riegat police have warned stokvel social clubs against carrying large sums of money as this placed members’ lives at risk.
The warning comes after an alarming increase in armed robberies of such clubs in Tshwane recently.
“Such incidents are sporadic as thugs ambushed members of social clubs knowing they are in possession of large sums of money,” said police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka.
“These robbers are armed with firearms; therefore, we appeal to members not to act like heroes,” said Maluleka.
He urged members to make other arrangements.

“Members of social clubs should refrain from keeping money and instead consider depositing it in banks,” said Maluleka.
Maluleka said victims of these crimes were usually followed from social clubs and ambushed.
