VIDEO: North musician’s notes of determination

This local musician hopes to change his community and help others, one musical note at a time.

A young man from the north of Pretoria fills a local parking lot with the beautiful sound of soulful music in his attempt to make a living from music, and hopes to change the community one note at a time.

A video of the talented saxophonist, Theo Mahlangu (23) recorded a month ago spread on social media pages like wildfire.

Every morning Mahlangu wakes up early to go play the saxophone at the Church Square for donations.

Mahlangu is originally from Soshanguve, but moved to Karen Park.

“I have not ever been employed, so I play music for money,” Mahlangu told Rekord.

Mahlangu started playing the trumpet at the young age of six and later upgraded to the saxophone.

“Everyday I wake up early, take a bath, go to Church Square and play music.”

He usually plays the saxophone at Church Square from 07:00 to 12:00.

“It is not a stable income, but that is how I survive.”

Mahlangu did not go to a music school to learn how to play the trumpet or saxophone.

“My father slapped me until I could play one song,” Mahlangu jokes.

“From that one song I learned the rest”.

Besides playing three instruments – the trumpet, saxophone and drums – Mahlangu also sings.

He has performed alongside the Tshwane Gospel Choir and at the Heritage restaurant.

“Music is my calling. My vision is one day to help homeless children with my music.”

Mahlangu says every day he sees homeless children in his neighbourhood.

“I want to help others and share what I have. I see a lot of them around me, even when I go to Church Square. It is my mission to get a stable income through music and help the homeless.”
