UPDATE: Tshwane metro to remove trash, restore electricity

“See a list of areas where the municipality would be removing waste today and tomorrow. Residents in these areas are asked to put their bins out in the street.”

The Tshwane metro said it would start restoring electricity and removing uncollected waste in neighbourhoods affected by this week’s crippling municipal workers strike.

Starting from today, the metro will be doing waste collection throughout the capital.

Residents were urged to place their bins outside their residential and business properties if their waste had not already been collected.

“The normal known waste collection schedule will also go ahead as from next week,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

“Following the acts of vandalism, dumping and trashing of streets, the metro has embarked on a cleaning initiative.”

The metro would also restore power to large areas before attending to individual complaints.

“Our technicians are monitoring the pre-paid vending system which is reportedly struggling,” said Mashigo.

“It needs to be emphasised that the system is not offline.”

Bus operations will only commence on Monday.

This will allow both the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) to inform their members about the outcome of the wage negotiations, Mashigo said.
