UPDATE: Identity of second suspect made known

Dr Freddie Malan was murdered on 31 January in his practice at the Jakaranda animal hospital in the Moot during an armed robbery.

The identity of the second suspect in the murder/homicide of a well-known veterinarian of the Moot has been made public. Dr Freddie Malan was murdered on 31 January in his practice at the Jakaranda animal hospital in the Moot during an armed robbery. Private detective Mike Bolhuis made the second identity known this past weekend.

He is urging residents to come forward with more information. This follows after Bolhuis shared video footage last week. In the video footage, three people can be seen entering and robbing a business.

According to Bolhuis, these suspects are wanted in more than 15 cases of armed robbery and murder in Gauteng.

They allegedly use the same modus operandi /method in their robberies.

“A woman will enter the business and distract the receptionist. Two men will then enter and rob them,” explained Bolhuis.

In Malan’s murder, the woman gained entry to the clinic by claiming she had a sick pet with her. “When the door was opened for her, she held it open for her two male accomplices.”

Malan died when he and one of the male suspects got involved in a struggle and a shot was fired which hit him in the chest. Bolhuis and his team were assigned to investigate Malan’s murder. Malan and his family have been clients of Bolhuis for many years.

In February this year, just after Malan’s death, the first identity of the male suspect has been revealed by Bolhuis. This suspect has been identified by facial recognition and by eyewitnesses.

The suspects are wanted for robbery all over Johannesburg, including Edenvale, Kemptonpark and Kensington.

“This is an urgent request for information,” said Bolhuis in a video which was posted on his Facebook page. There have been no arrests thus far and a case of murder and robbery is being investigated by police.

Rekord reported earlier that the death of Malan was such a shock to residents that they spontaneously started leaving flowers in front of his practice.

“It was entirely spontaneous and not planned at all,” said Elsabe van Staden, chairperson of the CPF. Malan’s death was a great loss for the community and several residents and clients told Rekord of the impact he had on the community.
