UPDATE: Cops ‘hot on heels’ of escapee
The details of his escape are unknown at this stage.
The police are “hot on the heels” of a rape accused who escaped from custody after he appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court earlier this week.
Clement Mahlangu (34) reportedly escaped while being transported back to prison after his court appearance on Tuesday.
“A case of escaping from police custody was opened against him,” said police spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi.
Mahlangu was among other awaiting trial prisoners being transported to the Kgosi Mampuru correctional centre.
“The details of his escape are unknown at this stage,” Nkoadi said.
Authorities are investigating.

“We ask for the public’s help in finding the suspect by contacting us on 08600-10111 or to send a SMS to 32211,” Nkoadi said.
The police officer court orderly believed to have helped Mahlangu escape was remanded in police custody until next week.
He was then set to return to court for a formal bail application.
