UPDATE: Burnt west learner unstable, but ‘making progress’
Logan Barnard was badly burned at a family braai last Saturday afternoon.

Although a five-year-old west boy badly injured in a braai accident more than a week ago, remained unstable, he was making progress, his mother has said.
Chanie Barnard said her grade-RR Laerskool Saamspan learner son Logan Barnard underwent a successful procedure for an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) at the weekend.

She said the procedure was to oxygenate Logan’s blood outside of his body to allow the heart and lungs rest.
She said the doctors were happy with the progress Logan was making thus far.

“However, he is still in danger and unstable,” Chanie said on Monday.
She said Logan struggled with his blood pressure on Sunday evening, and that his kidneys did not function but were better on Monday morning.
“Doctors are now planning to clean his wounds. But because he did the ECMO, he is bleeding a lot,” she said.
“He is not yet ready for the operation yet for skin grafting, because he is still too unstable,” she said.

“But besides all that, I trust that things are going to get better.”
Previously, Chanie said Logan caught alight at his home while the family were getting ready for their customary Saturday afternoon braai.
She said they immediately jumped into the swimming pool with him to douse the fire, then rushed him to the Eugene Marais Hospital.

“He was stabilised then airlifted to Garden City hospital in Johannesburg.”
He suffered serious burns to his face, arms, leg and right hand.
