Obey the laws or close down, Laudium police warn tavern owners

“The community was sensitized to how taverns and shebeens contributed to crime in the area."

The Laudium police have called on tavern and shebeen owners to comply with the laws following a meeting this week.

During the meeting, attended tavern owners and other law enforcement agencies, the police urged the taverns and shebeens to trade responsibly and comply with the law, said Laudium police spokesperson Constable Simon Chokoe.

Laudium Station Commander Lt-Col Johan Britz was joined by the Vispol commander, social crime prevention unit, sector managers, national liquor office and RISA.

“The community was sensitised to how taverns and shebeens were contributing to crimes such as murder, rape, assaults and domestic violence in our area.

“Another important thing that was discussed was noise pollution, especially coming from these taverns,” Chokoe said.

“They were further encouraged to continue working very closely with the police on fighting crime.

“Together we can create safer communities.”
