UPDATE: North prisoner escapee remanded in custody

The rape accused man made an appearance with a limp, swollen face and bloodshot eye among other injuries.

A rape accused, who escaped police custody last week but was rearrested over the weekend, appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court with a limp, swollen face, bloodshot eye and bruised lip on Monday afternoon.

Clement Mahlangu (34) was remanded in police custody until his next appearance in court next month.

He escaped from police custody while he was being transported back to the Kgosi Mampuru correctional facility where he was being kept last week Tuesday.

Mahlangu had appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on a separate charge of rape on the day.

In court, Rekord learned Mahlangu had another pending case of rape against him registered at the Rietgat police station.

Mahlangu’s next appearance was set for 4 September 2019 where a private attorney was expected to represent him.

Meanwhile, police officer Samuel Mokoena who is accused of helping Mahlangu escape was also remanded in police custody during his court appearance last week.

Mokoena’s bail application was set for later this week.

The National Prosecuting Authority was yet to confirm how many cases were pending against Mahlangu.
