Police have arrested a 22-year-old University of Pretoria student in Hatfield in connection with a charge of rape.
This was after a group of University of Pretoria students staged a protest calling for the arrest of the alleged rapist and many others involved in similar crimes.
The man was arrested on Monday evening, after a 19-year-old woman who is also a student at the university was located and was convinced to open a case at the Brooklyn police station, police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said.

“After the case was opened, the police with the help of the Hatfield city improvement district immediately responded and arrested the alleged suspect,” she said.
The woman was allegedly raped last year in September, by a friend who lived in the same building where she stayed.
“The family violence, child protection and sexual offences investigations unit is investigating the case further,” the spokesperson said.
During the protest, the students were said have moved from one student accommodation to another because they were “tired of being victimised without any action being taken”.
The protest came after a man accused of raping and killing University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana appeared in court on Monday.

Gauteng police provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela applauded the police for their swift response and immediate arrest of the alleged suspect.
“This is proof that the SAPS aim to act without delay to address gender-based violence and crimes against women and children.
“Victims of crime are urged not to report crimes on social media platforms alone, without reporting it to the SAPS. The SAPS can only investigate cases like these and execute arrests when a case docket is opened for investigation,” Mawela said.
