Brakes screeching and shock as truck hits house

“I was lying on the sofa when I suddenly heard brakes screeching.”

“I was lying on the sofa when I suddenly heard brakes screeching,” said Douw Prinsloo of Ferdinand Street in Daspoort.

“At first I thought an accident was happening on the highway then the next moment I saw a truck hurtling towards our house.”

He said it appeared a trucker had swerved to avoid an accident on the R80 toward Soshanguve when he lost controlled and rammed into his house.

Xander Loubser of Ambu-link ambulance services told Rekord that the trucker was stuck in the wreck for more than an hour before he was freed then airlifted to hospital.

Prinsloo said he was with his workers in the house when the accident occurred and that he’d injured his back and neck.

“I had just laid down to rest when it happened,” he said.

He said he was hospitalised to bring down his blood pressure

“It only stabilised on Wednesday,” he said adding he’d return to hospital for a follow up on Friday.

“My back is still sore and I have a stiff neck,” he said.

Prinsloo said a large part of his house was destroyed.

He said his living-, sitting-, TV-, walk-in closet, bath- and spare rooms were destroyed while the roof also shifted on impact.

“We stayed in a guest house until Wednesday night, but we decided to return to our house and use the two rooms at the back,” he said.

“We feel more at ease in our home.”

Prinsloo said he and his wife had lived in the house for 13 years.

“Our grandchildren regularly visit us. I am just grateful they were not home when it happened,” he said.

He said they do not need any help or donations right now.

“Although we lost a lot – memories that we will never get back – the owner of the truck company is very helpful,” he said.

Local ward councillor Elma Nel was sympathetic towards the injured.

“I am very sorry to hear what happened,” said Nel.
