Springbok legend Chester Williams (49) dies

It is believed that he died from a heart attack.

Springbok rugby legend Chester Williams died at the age 49 on Friday evening.

It is believed that he died of a heart attack.

Williams was the left wing in the famous Springbok team of 1995 that won the Rugby World Cup in South Africa.

In his career Williams played 27 tests for the Springboks from 1993 to 2000.

He is the fourth player of the 1995 word cup team to die.

Tough as nails flanker Ruben Kruger died in 2010, at the young age of 39, after losing a long battle to brain cancer.

The team’s legendary scrum half Joost van der Westhuizen died in February 2017, at the age of 45 after a six year battle with motor neuron disease.

Earlier this year (July), Williams’ partner on the opposite wing in that epic 1995 World Cup final against the All Blacks in Johannesburg, James Small (50), also died after suffering a heart attack.

The team’s brilliant coach, Kitch Christie, the only Springbok coach in history with a 100% success rate in test matches, also died when he lost his battle against cancer in 1998 – only four years after the success of 1995. He was 58.
