Pretoria sidewalk champions announced

Chris and Reyneke du Preez from Van Heerden Street were announced as the winners for October in the sidewalk of the month competition.

The tenth sidewalk champions for the year in Capital Park’s unique competition were announced this week.

Chris and Reyneke du Preez from Van Heerden Street were announced as the winners for October in the sidewalk of the month competition.

The trophy handover was done on Monday morning at the premises by Donne-Li Johnson of Real One Real Estate and Mike Burd from the Capital Park Residents and Ratepayers Association (Caprra).

“We are very happy to have won the award, although it was very unexpected,” said the man of the house, Chris.

“The reason it was so unexpected was because we are actually moving to Cullinan soon.”

Chris said he grew up in Capital Park and has lived in the area for about 51 years.

His wife, Reyneke, said she has lived in the area for 23 years, adding that she has been a Moot resident all her life.

“Before I moved to Capital Park, I lived in Waverley,” she said.

The couple was thrilled over their win and said competitions like this were very important.

“I believe that initiatives such as the sidewalk of the month award makes a very big difference,” he said.

“If each resident only kept their part of the sidewalk clean, it would already make a very big difference and the area would look much cleaner.”

“I feel that a dirty area also contributes to crime.”

Reyneke said she enjoyed living in Capital Park.

“The community of Capital Park is very diverse and there is also good teamwork among residents.”

She motivated other residents to take part in the sidewalk of the month competition.

The initiative, the brainchild of Caprra, is aimed at motivating residents to maintain their neighbourhood.

The competition was launched in May last year and the trophy was awarded to the first winner by former mayor, Solly Msimanga.

Msimanga, who is also a resident of the area, applauded the initiative.

Burt said one of Caprra’s main objectives was to encourage residents to work together to resolve their own problems and not only to depend on a few individuals.

“Collectively, we can accomplish so much more,” he said.

Burt said the trophy would be awarded monthly, not only to the most beautiful sidewalk but to the most well-maintained.

“Not all sidewalks can be made beautiful because there is very limited space,” he said.
