DSTV gets flak for chopping popular shows
The broadcaster announced it would scrap the History, Crime + Investigation and Lifetime channels from the end of the current contract term.
Satellite TV service Multichoice has announced plans to introduce two new channels to replace the three it was scrapping from its DStv bouquet at the end of the month.
The broadcaster announced it would scrap the History, Crime + Investigation and Lifetime channels from the end of the current contract term – 1 November 2019 to be replaced by an established global brand and the other, a new innovative brand.
In the statement, the service said it was part of the “efforts to refresh content line-up and optimise the suite of channels on offer”.
Although the channels were expected to be scrapped, DStv advised viewers would still be able to watch their firm favourites such as the Housewives franchise on an alternative channel – 1 Magic.

“Both channels will bring exciting new titles and genres that viewers will really enjoy including, among others, blue-chip documentaries, history and factual reality shows,” the statement said.
DStv said it would continue to increase “significant” investment in local shows and content “which have great resonance with customers and are a key driver of engagement”.
“We are continuously reviewing our content line-up and channel selection to improve our entertainment offering to our customers as well as ensuring customers continue to get good value,” the statement said.
News of the multi-channel scrapping was met with much disapproval from subscribers on social media.
On Facebook Karin Steuer threatened to cancel her subscription saying: “Channel 170 and 171 (Crime and Investigation) are the only channels I watch. If this ends, I will be ending my relationship with DSTV.”

Rina Meyer said the broadcaster was in “breach of contract”.
“When I signed my contract with DSTV those channels were part of the package…and I do watch it often…breach of contract from DSTV side.”
Estelle Johnson Jameson said: “Love History channel… Thinking of leaving it’s also becoming very expensive…”
Josias Mamatela called on the broadcaster to reduce its subscription fees: “Then they must also reduce the amount of money we’re paying.”

Glen Mitchell said it was the “perfect time” to switch to alternative methods of watching TV: “Perfect time to cancel DStv and switch to Netflix/amazon prime”.
Stephnie Smit said it was time subscribers got the option to personalise their subscriptions: “It is time to get a list of DSTV channels and only pay for those you select.”
Khuto Papakgopo Mahowa, on the other hand, commended the broadcaster for the decision.
“I think DSTV did good think cause even criminals to watch that channel and learn how our crime scene investigators do their investigation and they cover their tracks. I will continue watching other programmes that are available. Good move DSTV,” he said.
