Bester, Matawane, Botes bag Centurion Of The Year Award

Our hope is that by highlighting what these individuals do for our community others would be inspired to do the same.

The winners of the third edition of the Centurion Of The Year Awards were announced on Saturday at Centurion Hotel.

Marius Bester from hospice, Masemola Christina Matawane Manager at the SPCA and Colonel Jos Botes of the SAPS were the three winners of this year’s award.

Organizer Michelle Van Zyl said the awards were born from the need to acknowledge individuals in the community who through their actions make Centurion better.
“Our hope is that by highlighting what these individuals do for our community that it would inspire others to do the same,” said Van Zyl.

Van Zyl added that each year the three recipients receive a unique award created by a local resident.

“The reason we use different awards every year is because we pick an award that is symbolic to the receivers of the year. This year we selected a succulent garden- hardly, resilient, and ability to get the job done with little resources.”

Bester said he was honored to be nominated and also to get the award.

“I was shocked when the announcement was made and there was a slight sweat that came through for stressing about it but I’m happy”

“It feels good but I do not do it for the recognition but to make a difference in somebody’s life. It feels very nice that the community sees what we are doing.”

Joanne van der Watt who received the award on behalf of Matawane because of her family commitments said it is wonderful that her colleague has been recognized for the work that she has been doing in the community with the animals.

“It is a thankless and a hard job, and she has to do it every single day.”
