An off-duty police officer helped lead a sting operation that led to the capture of a murder suspect who had been on the run for almost a year and a half this weekend.
It is believed that the 34-year-old man was among the suspects who reportedly lured Shaun Douglas Chabalala (23), an upcoming musician, to a flat in Sunnyside, east of Pretoria, in May last year, with a fake advertisement for a luxury camera.
Chabalala was pushed to his death from the seventh floor of an apartment building during what is suspected to be a robbery gone wrong.
“Despite being off-duty for the weekend and attending a wedding of a friend and fellow captain in Mpumalanga yesterday, a tenacious Sunnyside police captain, Simon Motolla, travelled more than 300 kilometres to organise the operation,” said police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela.

The suspect was reportedly found inside the ceiling of a house in Pretoria West where he hid himself after he spotted the police.
Mavimbela said this was after an initial search and the SAPS dog unit being summoned to the house.
Meanwhile, the police are appealing for any information that could lead to the re-arrest of Obienna Greg Ofoegbuliwe, an alleged accomplice who has absconded after he was granted bail of R3 000.
Mavimbela urged anyone with information to report anonymously to the Crime Stop Hotline on 08600-10111 or to Crime Line SMS on 32211.
