A man has been arrested following a shooting in Karel Trichardt Street, Mountain View.

A man has been arrested following a shooting in Karel Trichardt Street, Mountain View.

Acting chairperson of the sector 1 CPF Johan van Staden confirmed the incident happened on Sunday.

According to Van Staden, a local resident had taken a loan from an alleged loan shark but was unable to settle the debt.

“The loan shark, along with a group of accomplices, went to the housing complex where the resident stays and demanded payment,” said Van Staden.

“He tried to intimidate the residents, including children, with a panga.

“Another resident acted in self-defence by drawing a firearm and firing a warning shot up in the air, before shooting the ‘loan shark’ in the leg twice,” Van Staden said.

The gunman was then taken into custody by the Hercules police and charged with attempted murder. The injured man was taken to Steve Biko academic hospital.

The police could not yet provide more information.
