Woman suffers burns in Sunnyside flat blaze

“The contents of the two bedrooms were completely burned down. A third bedroom inside the flat was also damaged by fire.”

A woman escaped with minor injuries after a flat she was in, caught fire on Wednesday morning, in Sunnyside.

The fire broke out in one of the Univa flats around 10:40 on the corner of Johnston and Reitz streets.

Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters extinguished two bedrooms that were extended and portioned under a balcony on the ground floor of a flat, said Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso.

“The contents of the two bedrooms were completely burned down. A third bedroom inside the flat was also damaged by fire.”

He said a female patient was treated for minor burns on the scene by paramedics but refused to be taken to hospital.

“Residents are advised to ensure that electrical equipment and appliances are switched off during periods of load shedding,” said Mabaso.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
