East charity cares for vulnerable children

“The organisation was formed to care for and inspire the children of Mamelodi to follow their dreams.”

A local organisation has encouraged children in Mamelodi to use their talents to stay away from the streets.

Bapotlakile non-profit organisation in Mamelodi East conveyed this message during a fun day and charity event at Rethabile sports grounds on Saturday.

Bapotlakile founder Potlako Obed Leola said he organised the event to show the children of Mamelodi that “we love and care about them”.

Children from various orphanages and centres for the disabled as well as other children in township, packed the event.

There were lots of activity on the day and the children played sport and traditional games, got their faces painted, listened to music and had the opportunity to ride horses from Invincible U-turn, They also enjoyed a free lunch.

“The organisation was formed earlier this year, with the aim of caring for Mamelodi children and inspiring them to follow their dreams,” said Leola.

Leola said he had a love for children and wanted to see them happy and not to see them being abused in any way.

“The organisation is all about giving back to the community especially for the little children in the community and to inspire them to become better people when they grow up.

“The children were encouraged to stay away from doing drugs and crime because it will destroy their future,” Leola said.

He said he formed the organisation with Tshepiso Mashamaite, Toliwe Kambule, Granny Leola and Kgomotso Mothaotse.

The plan was to host the event annually, to keep the children away from the streets.

Thabo Mashapa (13) from Mamelodi East said he was very happy and enjoyed all the games and he wished that the organisation could host another event like this during the December holidays to keep them busy and away from the streets.

Parent Sibongile Mahlangu said she was very happy that Leola had organised the event to motivate children and also to tell them about the dangers of doing drugs and crime.

She challenged other organisations in Mamelodi and Nellmapius to organise events to interact with the children.

Leola invited the other organisations and local business to come on board and “take care of the future leaders of this country”.
