Wierdabrug police warn of remote jamming

Parents in Wierdabrug have been urged to take extra precautions when dropping their children off at school and not to leave any valuables in their unattended vehicles.

Parents in Wierdabrug have been urged to take extra precautions when dropping their children off at school and not to leave any valuables in their unattended vehicles.

The warning came after a cellphone and laptop were stolen from a vehicle outside a school in the area, according to police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto.

The incident happened last week Thursday.

An unknown number of robbers managed to gain access to the vehicle using a remote jammer.

Two other vehicles were also targeted in the same area.

“Wierdabrug police are investigating a case of theft and no arrests have been made at this stage,” Moloto said.

“We urge parents to ensure that when they drive or drop off their children at school, all valuables are kept safe in the boot or out of sight.

“Please ensure doors are properly locked by physically checking them before leaving the car.

“The same applies when visiting shopping malls.”

The police also urged schools in the area to spread the message to parents.

Here are some tips to prevent becoming a victim of remote jamming and smash and grabs:

– After parking your vehicle, physically ensure that doors are locked.
– Use your central locking remote while standing close to your vehicle.
– When driving around the city, ensure that your windows are closed or at least only slightly opened.
– Always be alert when approaching intersections and red traffic lights; attackers often loiter in these places.
– Keep your doors locked at all times.
– Ensure that your valuables, handbags, wallet, laptops, iPads, etc, are placed in your car boot.
– Never display your valuables on the car seat.
