Pumped up AB ready as Mzansi Super League starts

The former Protea says it's important for Tshwane to get off to a good start in their opener at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead against the Durban Heat.

The days leading up to the opening weekend of the Mzansi Super League are often a thrill-a-moment for cricket fans.

Tshwane Spartans have been the Mzansi Super League’s most discussed franchise since they acquired AB de Villiers as their marquee player for the spectacle’s inaugural season last year.

“We have a nice mix of talent in our ranks and I am expecting more from the team this year, as we have made some good acquisitions at the draft,” says De Villiers.

“We had a good team last year, and I think this year, we are even better heading into in our second season of MSL as we have made some incredible buys with players like Curran (Tom) and Morkel (Morne) just to name a few. I don’t want to put too much pressure on us, but I believe we are going to go all the way. We played some descent cricket at times last season, and I think we should pick it up a notch this year.”

With an array of talent in their ranks the Spartans failed to reach the knockout stages and that is something De Villiers believes must change in 2019, as they aim to lift the MSL trophy.

The former Proteas batsman said it was important for Tshwane to get off to a good start in their opener at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead against the Durban Heat and keeping focused would be the key.

“It’s important that you get off to a good start,” De Villiers said.

“When the fixtures come out you look forward to that first game, and Saturday, November 9, is on your mind, but we’ve had some good showings at times in our first year, and we’ve got through, so we’re pleased with that.

“We are not pleased with the position we ended in, much improved at times, but that counts for nothing if you don’t win at the end. The focus this year, will be on playing some good cricket and winning games. We have some of the best fans in SA cricket and it is very important that we give them something to be proud of.”

MSL 2.0 kicks off on Friday, 8 November, with champions Jozi Stars hosting last season’s runners-up, Cape Town Blitz, at Imperial Wanderers Stadium.
