Mamelodi police are looking for the mother of a new-born baby boy who was left abandoned in a black plastic refuse bag.
The baby was found in bushes near houses in Mamelodi West Section D1, next to Moretele park resort by an elderly man and woman, according to police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso.
The elderly man, who resides not far from the bushes, heard a cry and asked the woman to accompany him to find out what was happening.
“They discovered a baby boy inside a plastic bag,” said Maheso.
They took the baby to the police station and reported the matter.
Maheso said a case of child abandonment was registered and the baby was taken to Mamelodi regional hospital.
It is reported that the child is doing well and the hospital and social workers are working together to place him in a safe place.
“The safety of women and children is our first priority,” said Maheso.
“We therefore urge anyone with information which can lead to the arrest of the perpetrator to please contact us.”
Anyone with such information can contact Constable Nkoko on 072-522-7849.
