NEWSFLASH: Suspected robber killed in shoot-out with police in Eersterust

A shootout between police and armed robbers saw one killed and another injured in Eersterust.

A shootout between alleged armed robbers and police ended in one of the men being killed and another wounded in Eersterust on Monday afternoon.

The shooting took place on the corner of Frank Adams and St Joseph avenues at around 15:30, according to police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo.

“Our national intervention unit was in the area when they noticed an armed robbery in progress,” Shibambo said.

“Five men were spotted robbing a vehicle and police gave chase.

“Two of the men fled on foot while three others fled in a white Honda Ballade.”

Shibambo said the men in the vehicle shot at police who retaliated causing the driver to lose control of the car.

“It crashed into a wall and the men continued to shoot at police.”

“One of the men was shot dead by police while another was shot in the leg. The third man managed to escape.”

Police seized a firearm which has since been sent for ballistic tests to try and establish if it was used in any other crimes.

“The wounded man was taken to hospital under police guard,” Shibambo said.

Police also recovered suspected stolen items from the getaway vehicle.

“The arrested man will appear in court as soon as he recovers from his wounds.”
