East bodybuilder aims to change people’s lives

Kekana, of Mamelodi East, said his passion for body-building started at an early age while he was at primary school after being motivated by his father who used to lift weights.

Wynton Kekana (25) studied zoology but he has a passion to “make people look good”.

Kekana, of Mamelodi East, said his passion for bodybuilding started at an early age while he was at primary school after being motivated by his father who used to lift weights.

He then started watching fitness and body-building shows on TV, read fitness magazines and watched through the window of a local gym as others went through their paces.

“My mother thought it was just a phase and that I would outgrow it but I kept teaching myself. Even when I went to college I would find some time to train and read about fitness,” he said.

He said the results of years of hard work and learning about fitness showed on him.

“I was working at a store and people would ask me for contacts of my personal trainer. Many did not believe it when I said that I had no personal trainer,” he said.

He said he realised that fitness could become a career for himself.

“I quit my job and started working as a full-time trainer. I started with one customer who was very obese, after two months she had to go and buy a new wardrobe. She became my advertisement, people could not believe I had changed her life,” he said.

Soon, Kekana had to turn some people down as those who wanted to keep in good shape in the township including models, bodybuilders and brides-to-be flocked to him.

“A modelling agency approached me and I train their models. My hands are full and it is now a trend that bridesmaids come to me before weddings to make sure they are in fine shape.

“I’m happy when I see someone I have trained on TV or in a magazine,” he said.

He said he used to compete as a bodybuilder but more customers meant he could no longer participate.

One of his customers Keabetswe Smith (20) said her life has changed since she started training with Kekana.

“I’m a bit lighter and I get compliments everywhere I go. I saw how he helped a friend who is an actress and I had to train with him,” she said.

She said Wynton also advises her on what to eat.

“He tells me what to drink and what to eat, also what to avoid, it has helped me a lot, I’m toned and sexy,” she said.
