According to Rekord’s sister publication, Vaalweekblad, the owner of a dog in Vanderbijlpark received a R1000 fine from a traffic official because the dog was sitting on the passenger seat of her car.
The traffic official stated it was ”against the law for pets to be on a public road.”
The owner shared the matter on facebook and it was established that no such law exists. The prosecutor immediately cancelled the fine, which now reflects badly on the traffic official, who is seemingly not familiar with the laws and by-laws of his province or the country. This has become a laughing matter for all involved.
Although there is no law prohibiting the owner of a dog to transport the dog in one’s vehicle, owners of pets should always take the safety of the pet into consideration. A large dog on the front seat of a car can be seriously injured by the airbag when a collision occurs.
