A man who allegedly hijacked a car in Centurion while trying to flee police was killed during a shootout in Centurion on Sunday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said the man was one of five men who attempted to rob a local grill when they were spotted by police.
“A nearby police officer from the Tshwane Flying Squad and a crew member in Lyttelton spotted a car skipping traffic lights,” he said.
He said three of the five men took off in the car, leaving two of their accomplices stranded on foot.
“Police chased the two suspects to a nearby filling station where one of the men started shooting at them.”

“They took cover and moments later the suspect hijacked a white Toyota Corolla.”
He said the police officers called for backup and chased the hijacker who was still shooting at them while in the hijacked vehicle.
The shooting continued until the Olievenhoutbosch area where the hijacker’s vehicle came to a standstill.
“On inspection of the vehicle, it was discovered that the suspect had been shot dead,” Makhubela said.
“His firearm was recovered.”
A second man was arrested after he was chased down by other officers.
He was also found in possession of unlicensed firearm.
“The arrested men will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon,” Makhubela said.
