A total of 90 people have been arrested following weekend operations by the police in the Tshwane east policing district.
“In an effort to make Tshwane a safer place for all, the police embarked on various crime prevention techniques over the weekend,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo.
The police stations involved in these operations included, Eersterust, Kameeldrift, Sinoville, Mamelodi, Mamelodi east, Cullinan, Ekangala, Welbekend, Bronkhorspruit and Boschkop.

“They employed high-density operations in the district, traced wanted suspects and enforced the liquor act,” he said.
“They also held intelligence-driven static roadblocks.”
This resulted in the closure of eight illegal liquor outlets in Mamelodi, Shibambo said.
He said the police also confiscated liquor during the closures.

“Heavy penalty fines were also issued to the offending owners,” he said.
Shibambo said five “undocumented persons” were arrested with 17 other for drinking in public.
He said during the roadblocks, 15 motorists were fined for traffic offences.

The rest of the people were arrested by various units for offences that were committed, Shibambo said.
“They were arrested for crimes such as theft, assault and domestic violence,” he said.
“All the suspects who were arrested for serious offences were detained and will appear in various courts on Monday.”
Meanwhile, police also reminded residents of the firearm amnesty period that will end on 31 May.
“Residents are encouraged to voluntarily hand in all unwanted firearms, firearm parts, ammunition and all other firearms they possess unlawfully before the amnesty period ends,” he said.
