A joint operation resulted in 240 people being arrested for various crimes in the Garsfontein area on Wednesday.
The operation was led by Tshwane District Commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni. Other stakeholders were Tshwane SAPS senior management, members from Prisa, security companies such as ADT, National Security, Interactive Security, Gauteng Traffic Department and Tshwane metro police.
The first phase of the operation led by Tshwane Trio Tracing team started with detective raids and tracing of wanted suspects.
“Suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from gender-based violence, murder, attempted murder, rape, business robbery, dealing in drugs, possession of suspected stolen vehicles, assault, pointing a firearm and being illegally in the country, possession of unlicensed firearms, shoplifting, protection orders, cash in transit heists, carjacking, kidnapping, business robbery, house robbery and even escape from legal custody,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Duane Lightfoot.

In the early hours of the morning, police took to the streets of Woodlane Village, commonly known as Plastic View informal settlement in Moreleta Park.
“At the first wing of Plastic View, eight illegal liquor outlets were closed down and fines to the value of R9 000 were issued to six other outlets,” Lightfoot said.
“At least a hundred dagga plants were uprooted for destruction.”
Meanwhile a roadblock was set up at Atterbury Road where more than 280 vehicles and 518 people were searched and 21 vehicles tested.

Fines to the value of R49 350 were issued for traffic-related offences and two people were arrested for being in possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
“Compliance inspections were conducted at six second-hand goods dealerships and fines to the value of R1 500 were issued for contravention of the Second Hand Goods Act,” Lightfoot said.
In a separate incident in Elarduspark, two men aged 40 and 21 were arrested for being in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition on Wednesday.

Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said a task team responded to a tip-off about owners of a house that were suspected of selling drugs.
“Upon arrival at the house two male suspects were found. The house was searched and no drugs were found but the suspects were found in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition,” he said.
All arrested suspects will appear before various magistrate’s courts within Tshwane in due course.
