Apies River ‘in a terrible state’

“There are many living along the river who also contribute to the pollution, which is a major reason for the slow flow of water”

A local Mayville resident in the Moot recently made a shocking discovery when she took her dog for a walk along the Apies River.

On 16 March Cindy Snyman was walking her dog near Fred Nicholson Street when she noticed that the river was in a very bad state.

She said they have lived in the area for almost a year and take their dog once or twice a week to walk and swim, which is why the deteriorating state of the river was such a shock to her.

“You have to see how the river bank has already washed away… it doesn’t make any sense at all,” she said.

She added that she regularly picks up litter next to the river.

“The river is dry! Look, if it rains properly, it flows well but then day after day it dries up.”

Local councillor Elmarie Linde went to inspect the state of the river after an inquiry was sent to her.

“This is due to the lack of resources at the municipality. Until now, it was not possible to do regular cleaning and deforestation along the canals,” she said.

“Because of that problem, it can have a slow flow. There is a programme to be put into operation and I will request that the municipality addresses this as soon as possible.”

Linde said pollution was a major problem at the Apies River canals.

“There are many living along the river who also contribute to the pollution, which is a major reason for the slow flow of water,” said Linde.
