A 41-year-old police sergeant appeared in the Pretoria Central magistrate’s court on Tuesday for allegedly shooting and killing his girlfriend at the police barracks in the Moot.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said the officer, who was based in the Flying Squad in Midrand, reportedly shot his 35-year-old girlfriend several times on Sunday evening.
“It is alleged that he accused her of having an affair with his colleague,” said Ipid spokesperson Sontaga Seisa.
“The victim died on the scene.”
He said the officer was arrested on Sunday.
Seisa said the man faces a charge of murder.
“He is in custody and will appear again in Pretoria Central magistrate’s court on 14 April 2020 for his formal bail application,” said Seisa.
He said Ipid was mandated to investigate, among other things, death in police custody, death as a result of police action as well as any complaint relating to the discharge of a police firearm by a police official.
