East school teacher ‘tests positive for Covid-19’

The school was due to open on Monday before education authorities postponed the opening day for grades 7 and 12 to 8 June.

A teacher at Laerskool Menlo Park in Pretoria east has tested positive for Covid-19, the school confirmed.

Teachers at the school have been placed in isolation for two weeks. The school was due to open on Monday before education authorities postponed the opening day for grades 7 and 12 to 8 June.

School headmaster Pieter Bredenkamp confirmed that teachers reported for duty last week Wednesday, and one of them tested positive for Covid-19.

Parents were informed via the school’s communication channel, Menlo Express.

“The school was evacuated and disinfected. All staff are now being tested,” said Bredenkamp.

“For the safety of our teachers and children, strict action had to be taken.

“Schoolwork will still be posted on the web page as in the past. More information regarding the use of Google Classroom, which will kick off today, will follow soon.

“We have confidence in the processes and mechanisms we have put in place to deal with the matter at hand,” Bredenkamp said.

“So please be assured that all is under control.”

The school is set to open on 15 June.
