Laudium man nabbed with million rand worth of cigarettes

When the suspect saw the marked police car, he switched on his car and tried to get away but was blocked by police.

A man was found and arrested with cartons of cigarettes to the value of a R1-million in Laudium on Wednesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the arrest happened in Maxwell Street, Claudius.

“On Wednesday around 13:00, Erasmia police were driving on the R55 when they noticed a stationary vehicle on the road. When the suspect saw the marked police car, he switched on his car and tried to get away but was blocked by police,” he said.

Naidoo said 15 cartons of cigarettes were found during the search.

“The police then proceeded to a house in Iqbal Street in Claudius where they found several boxes and loose cartons of cigarettes valued at approximately R1-million.”

The cigarettes were confiscated. Naidoo said the 29-year-old man has been detained.
