Plight of hundreds relieved with food parcels

Dinokeng Game Reserve said the food parcel project was made a reality by the 180 land owners in the game reserve, providing food to child-headed families, the elderly and others in the community whose needs were the greatest.

The plight of hundreds of families in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, was relieved through the donation of food parcels.

We appreciate Karen Richie for coming forward to assist as the community had not been working throughout the lockdown, Kekana Gardens community chair Reward Shadung told Rekord.

Richie is one of the property owners in the Dinokeng Game Reserve who devised the plan to assist the community with the food parcels.

More than 600 families residing in the 30 blocks of Kekana Gardens received food.

We are really grateful as the food parcels help those who are struggling, Shadung said.

Shadung said they did not want to receive money as that was not their aim.

We agreed that they, as Dinokeng, would buy the food parcels, then we identify the suitable beneficiaries and hand them out to those in the community who needed them the most, he said.

Shadung said they then identified child-headed families, the elderly and others in the community whose needs were the greatest.

In total we managed to give parcels to about 630 families, he said.

Shadung added the food parcels also brought relief to people employed at the reserve, who could not work because of the lockdown, which started in March.

Dinokeng Game Reserve general manager David Boshoff said the food parcel project was made a reality by the 180 land owners in the game reserve.

He said a fundraiser was conducted by the land owners asking people to open their hearts and open their wallets to assist the local community.

I think they collected over R100 000, Boshoff said.
