Ex-police officers deliver memo – second time around

The group, who claimed they had been unfairly dismissed and discriminated against, again marched to the building last week Thursday.

A group of disgruntled ex-SAPS members managed to hand over a memorandum of their grievances to police management recently.

This after they were ‘chased away’ when they previously tried to do so, three weeks earlier on 24 June after marching to the SAPS main offices in Pretoria.

“We were told police minister Beke Cele was in a meeting,” said advocate Dan Teffo.

The group, who claimed they had been unfairly dismissed and discriminated against, again marched to the building last week Thursday.

They demanded ex-members be reinstated at work and said they wanted to expose corruption in the police and also promote accountability by senior officers.

Teffo said they demanded the ex-members be reinstated to their previous positions by settlement agreements.

“The precedent has been set in a case with our white counterparts, who were unlawfully reinstated, during settlement agreement in 2019.”

He said some of the ex-members had won their arbitration cases, but there were refused to resume duties.

“This despite arbitration awards, enforcement orders and contempt-of-court orders in their favor.”

He said also some of the ex-members were owed salaries in arrears for several years.

“An ex-member from Hammanskraal won an arbitration award on 13 February 2013. He was reinstated on 6 March 2013, but the SAPS refused to pay back his salary in arrears for almost 28 years now,” he said.

The group consisted of ex-members from across various provinces in the country. Teffo claimed some senior employees in the SAPS were appointed fraudulently and should be fired.

“Some must be suspended and investigated.”

Teffo said the memorandum was received by a senior officer this time around. Police did not comment at the time of going to print.
