Provincial traffic officers, families screened and tested for Covid-19

The purpose of the mass testing programme was said to have to proactively detect and prevent the spread of the deadly virus among its members and provide uninterrupted service delivery on the roads.

Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) officers and their immediate families were screened and tested for Covid-19 on Thursday.

“We’re expecting around 700 officers,” GTP spokesperson Sello Maremane said.

The purpose of the mass testing programme was said to have to proactively detect and prevent the spread of the deadly virus among its members and provide uninterrupted service delivery on the roads.

“We believe in the principle that prevention is better than cure,” Maremane said, adding the officers had been “hard at work” since the national lockdown was effected in March.

“It’s necessary to test members and their family,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tracy Mouton, an immediate family member of one of the officers, said she loved the Gauteng community safety department’s mission.

“It’s very important to get tested as we have elderly family members and children,” she said.

Mouton further said it was a “lovely opportunity” for her to educate her children, adding that the onus was on parents to teach their children to sanitise and wear their masks properly.
