Beloved security guard’s death shocks Affies

The restaurant on the school grounds, Vincent's, was named after him in 2017 at the request of the girls.

The Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool community was shocked by the sudden passing of popular security guard Vincent Mtembu this week.

“His death leaves a huge void at the school,” said Affies liaison officer Colleen Naudé.

Mtembu was so popular with learners that they in 2017 requested that the restaurant on the school grounds be named after him.

“Our hearts are very sad, but Vincent will always have a place of honour at our school. May our Heavenly Father comfort his family in this bitterly difficult time. Affies regret the loss of an icon of our school community.”

The 46-year-old father of two from Soshanguve has been part of the Affies family as a guard at the Bond Street gate since 2006.

The school announced Mtembu’s death on social media on Friday.

News of his death has touched the hearts of former Affies, parents and daughters.

The school’s alumni decided to make Mtembu’s family part of its alumni community as well as the relief fund.

Former Affies learner, Helene Eloff, said Mtembu always made them feel at home.

“I worked as a residence guardian at Affies after school hours. Learners were always safe in his care. He was always in charge.

“He will surely be missed terribly by everyone at the school.”

“We loved him very much,” said matric learner Loudean Benadie.

“He cared for each of us from the bottom of his heart and we for him.”

Affies parent Jozet Muller said he even helped find her child’s lost saxophone.

“It’s so sad. How many times have we left books, envelopes, assignments and bags with him in safekeeping for the kids. We will miss you, Vincent. You’re part of the school and we are saddened by this great loss. Rest in peace,” Muller said.
