Littering in Tsamaya Road cause serious health hazard

“We have been complaining to Tshwane metro for a long time but nothing has been done to stop littering at Tsamaya Road,” residents complain.

Mamelodi East residents in Section 14 want the Tshwane metro to come with serious plans to stop illegal dumping taking place Tsamaya Road.

Mamelodi’s main road is filthy and the stench of the waste is affecting the residents living next to it.

Pensioner Gideon Phalane (71) residing at corner Tsamaya Road and Malema Street known as Lion Bridge, said littering and waste plastic bags dumped caused storm water drains to block and pests like mosquitoes and big rats festing in their yards.

“We have been complaining to Tshwane metro for a long time but nothing has been done to stop the littering at Tsamaya Road,” said Phalane.

Residents in the area also blamed the metro trucks collecting waste plastics bags for not doing their job as they are required.

Phalane said if they collect all waste plastic bags, “we won’t find ourselves in this situation. Our health is at risk.”

He said residents are trapped in their own houses

“We are always locked inside our houses fearing for our health. Some residents have already started complaining about their lungs,” Phalane said.

“We can’t open our windows for fresh air because of the stench coming from Tsamaya Road.”

He added the whole area is covered with litter everywhere and it would take months to be cleaned.

“We have lost hope because Tshwane metro had never attended to any of our complaints.”

He added residents went to complain almost every week at the Mamelodi municipal offices.

Phalane said the community need to be in charge and make sure that all live in a healthy and clean environment.

He said residents donated money to hire a private truck to load the plastic bags that were left behind by Tshwane metro.

Mamelodi East community police forum and Thandanani Drop Inn centre where tonnes of waste were collected as part of a massive clean-up campaign aimed to keep Mamelodi’s main road, Tsamaya Road, clean.

The massive clean-up campaign had about 122 volunteers who worked tirelessly to keep Tsamaya Road clean, but community members continue to litter the road.

He pleaded with Tshwane metro to come and unblock the storm water drain in Tsamaya Road.

Phalane concluded by pleading with the public to work together in the fight against littering.
