City issues safety tips for flooding

The City of Tshwane gave tips on what to do during a flood.

Pretoria saw significant rainfall at the weekend, with the SA Weather Service issuing a flood warning for Gauteng.

Some parts of Pretoria experienced 62mm of rainfall on Saturday and Sunday.

The city of Tshwane gave some tips for motorists to keep in mind when driving in severe rain, when a potential flooding may occur:

– Avoid low-lying bridges when it is raining, they are flood-prone.

– If trapped in a vehicle during a flood, be sure to exit through the window of the car and get to higher ground as soon as possible.

– Always try to remain calm and do not panic when your car is submerged in water. Vehicles are replaceable.

– Calmly unbuckle your seatbelt and roll down your window to get out of the car.

– If your windows won’t open, let your car fill with water. You will then be able to open the doors.

– When outside the car, swim to the surface and get to dry ground before calling for help.
