Head-on crash claims 4 lives outside Pretoria

Jaws of life had to be used to free the victims from the vehicle and bakkie.

Four people were killed when a bakkie and a vehicle collided head-on outside Pretoria on Sunday evening.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the accident happened between Swartboom and Vontyn area in the Moretele district council municipality in North West.

“The Moretele fire service called the Tshwane EMS requesting assistance, citing that they were without the necessary resources to extricate the trapped victims from the two vehicles that crashed head-on.

“Upon their arrival on the scene, firefighters found two the vehicles. There were three deceased victims in the light motor vehicle, two males and one female,” Mabaso said.

He said the driver of the bakkie was also trapped in his vehicle and was declared dead.

“City of Tshwane firefighters had to use the jaws of life to free the victims. According to police, five patients from the light motor vehicle and two from the bakkie (all with undetermined injuries) were transported to a Bela-Bela hospital prior to the arrival of the Tshwane emergency services personnel,” Mabaso said.

“We are calling upon motorists to desist from overloading vehicles with passengers and to adhere to speed limits. Extra caution and vigilance should be exercised when driving on rural roads with limited visibility,” he said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
