"Taverns we found to be operating outside of national lockdown curfew hours were closed down and issued with fines."
Five illegal liquor outlets were closed down and liquor valued at an estimated R30 000 confiscated during police operations conducted in Mamelodi East at the weekend.
“Taverns we found to be operating outside of national curfew hours (00:00-04:00) were closed down and issued with fines,” said police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane.
Two people were also arrested for public drinking during the operation, which was led by station commander Brigadier Terence Naidoo.
Naidoo reminded members of the public that the country was still on alert level 1 of the Covid-19 lockdown.
“Level 1 regulations are still valid and in effect,” he said.

He also warned those who were found in illegal taverns to “stop interfering” with police while they were performing their duties.
Mamelodi East SAPS also arrested 32 people for various offences at the weekend.
These included malicious damage to property, theft, assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robberies, dealing and possession of drugs, public drinking and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Naidoo thanked community members who gave police intelligence and encouraged them to continue working with them to fight the rampant crime in Mamelodi East.
Those arrested were expected in court soon.
Naidoo also encouraged members of the community to report any criminal activity in the Mamelodi East area on 012-815-7079 or crime stop number 08600-10111 or the MySAPS app.
