Okae Molao held in Ga-Rankuwa and Akasia

Police and various law enforcement held yet another operation under the Okae Molao banner on Thursday in Ga-Rankuwa and Akasia.

The operation began in the early hours of Thursday morning and resulted in road traffic fines amounting to R69 000 and the arrest of 34 undocumented people.

“We are still arresting a lot of people who do not have documents to be in the country. They will be processed and sent back to their countries,” said district police commission Major-General Hilda Mohajane.

Mohajane said the operation was compiled of two groups which concentrated on compliance.

“This shows that our people are not complying with the road traffic act. Several liquor outlets and tuck shops were checked for compliance. Seven liquor outlets were found to be non-compliant.

“During the president’s address yesterday, he mentioned the issue of the liquor outlets that are not complying. You find that social distancing is a problem, people are not wearing masks and the people gather in big numbers, that’s where the problem comes.”

Mohajane said they also focused on the issues of drugs.

“There’s a lot of drugs and since early in the morning we arrested people that are dealing with drugs. Drugs are a problem for us, you find that school children are using drugs.

“We want to appeal to our communities to please assist us with these people who are selling drugs.”

She appealed to community members to behave as the country is approaching the festive season.

Mahanjana also warned stokvel members to be vigilant when withdrawing money that they have saved during the year.

“This is the time when they share the money they have saved for the year. They are being followed from the bank, and for some reason, the perpetrators will know how much a person has withdrawn from the bank.

“We just buried a colleague who was a victim of a bank following,” she said.

“Some men followed him from the bank with his son and he was shot right in front of the gate of his house in Ga-Rankuwa.

“So we want to appeal to our communities to be safe when you withdraw money if you see someone suspicious following you, go to the nearest police station and ask for assistance,” she concluded.
