Mams youth walk against GBV

"GBV is a serious issue in our community and as a movement we are tired of seeing and reading about it every day.”

Mamelodi youth gathered in their numbers to promote unity to end the violence against women and children abuse by taking part in a hike and a colour run.

The hike was organised by Matla a Moya Youth movement organisation for youth at Magaliesberg mountain on Saturday.

Founder of the organisation, Reverend Shaun Nkosi (30) said the movement is a NPO and mainly focuses on protecting the rights of children and youth from maltreatment, neglect and abuse.

The organisation was formed in 2011, with only 10 members.

Youth stand together against gender-based violence.

“GBV is an issue in our community and as a movement, we are tired of seeing it as a trend, whereas it does not only affect women but it is about gender equality and promoting safety and the protection of children,” said Nkosi.

The movement conducted a colour walk activity as an icebreaker to commence with the hike.

Nkosi said at the peak of the mountain a moment of silence was held in respect of the victims of abuse and a prayer session for safety.

“We need to have more of these programmes and focus also on men empowerment and other gender-based issues,” said Abdul Maimane who took part in the hike.

He said that the gospel choirs and motivation speakers entertained the youth and also advised them where to get help or report GBV.

Nkosi added that the hike proceeded to Moretele resort.

“The programme for GBV does not end here with hiking, there is a lot of activities planned for the year,” said Nkosi.

“The next programme will be Born Free Dialogue whereby the youth will get a chance to express their feelings about GBV and come up with solutions to fight GBV,” said Nkosi.

People responded positively to the awareness programme and adhered to Covid-19 regulations.

The organisation was joined by Vintage Delegation, Sweet Melodies gospel choir from Atteridgeville, Shabba PR marketing and Reptile Keepers.
